The Rev. Dallas F. Billington, highly esteemed pastor of the Akron Baptist Temple, was tried in Akron Municipal Court on a charge of disorderly conduct in April 1940. A Celtic Street neighbor had objected to the church’s use of a huge loudspeaker in the temple’s tower to broadcast Billington’s services. Nearly 200 members of the congregation jammed the courtroom and halls, bowing their heads in prayer. The jury deliberated 40 minutes before acquitting the pastor. Hallelujah!
